Update to Trackback Popup plugin

I thought I’d make note of this here in case you missed it below. I’ve made an update to the Trackback Popup plugin I made. It wasn’t giving the correct number of trackbacks. The query initially was only counting trackbacks. I’ve gone in and updated it to include pingbacks too. It should HOPEFULLY be giving the correct number now. If you’ve already downloaded this plugin, please make sure to get the updated code.

Maybe I should install Scripty’s Show Recently Edited posts plugin since I’ve got plugins here that I’ll more than likely be editing. Maybe I’ll do that this afternoon.

Is there enough interest?

Recently, I wrote my own guestbook script. I was unhappy with the one I was using, and I couldn’t find one I liked. So I decided to write my own so it would do what I wanted it to. It’s just a basic guestbook script, but it serves its purpose. Also, it was a good learning experience for me. I delved deeper into php … into more ‘object oriented’ programming. I created a ‘functions’ file and a ‘language’ file.

I have had a couple people as me if I was gonna make it available for download. Well, that depends. I did code it with that in mind. But I’m only going to release it if there’s intrest in it.

You can find the demo (basic) setup here.

You can find a customized install of it here.

There is an administrative backend for the script. You can edit and/or delete entries, ban IP addresses, update config settings, and update the admin password. I don’t have a demo for the backend at this time. I may do that in the future if people are interested in downloaded the script but wanna see the admin backend first.

So … if you think you might be interested, check out the links above to see the script in action. Then come back here and take part in the poll. If there is enough interest, I’ll release the script for download (for free of course).

If only …

If you’ve been a regular reader of my site or know me at all, then you know I’m a HUGE racing fanatic. I started watching about midway thru the 2000 season (Dale Jr’s rookie season). I don’t think there’s been a season since I started watching where I didn’t complain about the broadcast for one reason or another. Both FOX and NBC have ticked me off. Too many commercials … showing only the leader when there are no other cars around him … stupid and annoying announcers … the list goes on and on.

I found this article on a message board and just found it way too funny not to post here (might as well … I posted it on my Dale Jr site and my Chance 2 site and on Harold’s board … gotta spread the funny … G-LOL ).

I’m a winner

I almost forgot to check the PowerBall numbers tonite. Good thing I did … ‘cuz I won!!! Woohoo!!! But before I go getting all excited … I only won $4. Oh well. I still won the lottery.

This is the second time I won. About a month ago or so (can’t remember exactly when), I won $3. I had just the PowerBall that time. This time I have the PowerBall and one other number.

Now … the big decision. Do I put all $4 of it back into the lottery and get 4 tickets for Saturday or should I just get my regular $2? hmm I think I’ll go for it … I’ll put all $4 back in. LOL Big spender, ain’t I? LOL G-razz3

Debating

Now that I have a job again (starting Monday). I’m thinking about getting a new digital camera. Back in May, I managed to drop my digital camera and brake it. I was told it would cost $175 to fix. shock For a bit more, I could get a new one. Well, I took the camera apart and managed to fix it myself. It still gives me trouble … I have to sometimes shake it gently before it will turn on. But I’ve had that camera for a LONG time. Can’t remember when I got it, but it’s gotta be a couple years ago. Time for a new one anyways.

Even though I won’t have the money left in my savings after paying next month’s rent, I’m still thinking about getting a new camera. The one I was is the Canon A75 (I musta had a brain fart when I first posted this. I said the A70 and meant the A75 … too much time on the computer today … LOL). I can get it online for $208 plus shipping … I think shipping is $15. Last time I looked at Walmart, they had it for $237. I might even check on the Canon A80 and see what it’s selling for now.

I can always put it on my credit card. I hate doing that, but with the new job, I can pay it off. I’m not sure how long mine’s gonna hold out. And Avalanche is gonna start playing in town again soon, and I need a working camera so I can get pics for the website. That is if they get more web space. I should really email Brad about that.

Comment leader plugin

I used a comment leader plugin on my MT blog. I wanted to use one here too. I did a search of the WP support forums and did find a post on this. However, the links in the post no longer worked. CRAP!! No one has responded to my post there asking for a current link, so I decided to make one myself.

At this stage, it’s very basic. It just displays at list of the people who have left the most comments (in order from highest to lowest) along with their comment count.

You can download the plugin here. Make sure to save it with a .php extension.

To use the plugin, put the following where you want the comment leader list to appear …

<?php comment_leaders(display,'before','after'); ?>

Where …

display is the number of leaders you want to display. DO NOT enclose this number in quotes (use 5 not ‘5′)!!
‘before’ is the text you want to display before the comment count number. This MUST be enclosed in quotes!
‘after’ is the text you want to display after the comment count number. This MUST be enclosed in quotes!

To do:

  • Provide more configuration options
  • Add link to last comment
  • Possibly add title of last post commented on

My ‘to do’ list would involve some advance database queries I believe. I’m not all that advanced in MySQL knowledge myself, but I am learning more as I go. If anyone out there knows how I could go about at least adding a link to the last comment, please let me know. I’ll incorporate it into the plugin and give you do credit.

If you encounter any problems with this, let me know so I can try to fix them. Also, if you know of another comment leader plugin, please direct me to the source code. Or if you know of how to improve on this code, let me know.

Gut bomb

Ugh … I feel ill … sick Since I’ve been working on this place all day and losing all track of time, it was 6:30pm before I realized it. Too late to make something for supper and nothing quick to make. So I decided to go to Burger King for supper. I got a Double Whopper with Cheese value meal. Can we say grease!!! The bottom bun was soaked in grease … you could see it.

It did taste pretty good though. Even though I feel really ill now after all that grease. I’d better actually make supper tomorrow nite.

Weekday plugin

Well … it looks like I’ve created another plugin today. I’m on a roll … G-LOL

Anyways, this one is a plugin that will add the weekday next to the date …

  • If the post was posted today, it will put “Today”.
  • If the post was posted yesterday, it will put “Yesterday”.
  • Otherwise it will put the actual weekday (i.e. Tuesday).

I had done this in MT and wanted to use it here too. Took a little more finagling than it did in MT because of the way that WP does the date. But it’s done. If you’d like to do this on your blog too, you can get the plugin here.

And to use this, replace …

<?php the_date(); ?>

with …

<?php weekday_date(); ?>

I’ve only got posts from today in my blog so far, so I can’t test this beyond that. So … if you have any problems or questions, please let me know.

Plugin file: weekday.php
Other needed files: none

:: EDIT - 23 Jun 04 9:15am :: There appears to be an issue with this plugin. It doesn’t display “Yesterday” like it is supposed to. I will work on it and post the updated code.

:: EDIT - 23 Jun 04 9:25am :: Took me only 10 minutes to figure out that one (actually less ‘cuz I fixed some other stuff). I’ve updated the code and it should work now.

:: EDIT - 23 Jun 04 12:24pm :: Looks like another issue has cropped up with this plugin. I’ve got it working correctly for “Today” and “Yesterday”, but other than that, it’s just putting either “Wednesday” or “Thursday”. I will be working on it this afternoon to resolve this issue. Please be patient with me. This is one of my first attempts at a plugin. I never said it was fool proof.

:: EDIT - 23 Jun 04 12:56pm :: Okay I think I have things working now. I was thinking too hard trying to fix it. The solution was easier than I thought. The plugin has been updated. Download and try the new code and let me know if it works.
